The only thing I don’t like about ‘2 Broke Girls’ is the fact that the writers CONSTANTLY use enlightened sexism.
FOR ONCE I want someone to make a comedy by and about and for women where their problems and goals have nothing to do with men or the fact that they are women.
Max and Caroline are obviously intelligent, funny, and empowered women. They don’t need to make fun of empowerment for women to be empowered.
The hipster jokes are spot on, though.
Not to mention they made a rape joke on it. No tolerance for that shit.
When my boyfriend and I watched it, it just turned out to pretty much be another ‘Two and a Half Men’ type show. The rape joke was infuriating.
It showed an attractive guy knock on the door to the girl’s shabby apartment late at night, startling the blond girl who says “oh my god I thought that was a rapist” (Something along those lines) to which the brown haired girl responds “Well if rapists looked like that, we wouldn’t call them rapists.”
Nope. You would call them rapists, because someone being attractive doesn’t suddenly entitle them to sex or give consent.
By saying that they not only tried to make light of rape, they put the thought in survivor’s heads that people may not consider their experience to be rape if the man were considered attractive. This terrible thought that rape is acceptable if it’s caused by a ‘sexy’ rapist seems to have caused a phrase now too.
When I was going to a concert I was talking to some women in line next to me when one of them asked if I’d seen one of the DJ’s for the radio station sponsoring the concert. I said no, and she said that the DJ in question was “So sexy I would just let him rape me and I wouldn’t say no.”
Since when has rape become some sort of twisted way to measure attractiveness?
Oh, and they had another little part where they talked about how ‘rapists don’t knock.’ Thank you for disregarding the rape of people who were assaulted by other people they knew or took to be friends. Because clearly the only kind of rapist is the one lurking in a dark ally with a knife.
